1 Compressor

The compressor is driven by the vehicle engine via a drive belt and compresses the sucked-in gaseous refrigerant in order to then pass it to the condenser.
Compressor failure can be caused by:
• Insufficient oil
• Bearing damage
• Leaks
• Humidity
Signs of problems can be:
• Noise development
• Poor cooling performance
• Total failure of the air conditioning system
The replacement of the compressor is usually associated with expensive cleaning and repairs to the complete air conditioning system!

2 Condenser

The condenser is located in front of the engine radiator and cools the refrigerant coming from the compressor so that it leaves the condenser in a liquid form.
Condenser failure can be caused by:
• Leaks (stones, accident)
• Soiling of the cooling fins
• Blockage (compressor damage)
Signs of problems can be:
• Poor cooling performance
• Condenser fan running permanently
• Total failure of the air conditioning system
Loss of refrigerant pollutes the environment!

3 Condenser fan

The condenser fan contributes to optimal liquefaction of the refrigerant in every operating state of the vehicle. It is installed as an auxiliary or combination fan in front of or behind the condenser or engine radiator.
Condenser fan failure can be caused by:
• Bearing damage
• Worn carbon brushes
• Fan wheel breakage
• Contact fault (electrical connection)
• Short circuit
Signs of such problems can be:
• Loud noise development
• Poor cooling performance
• The compressor switching on and off frequently
• Increasing engine temperature (with combination fan)
• Fan failure

4 Filter/drier

The task of the filter/drier is to remove humidity and impurities from the liquid refrigerant.
In addition, it serves as a storage tank for the refrigerant.
There is a granulate filter pad inside the housing which can only absorb a certain amount of humidity.
The effectiveness of the filter/drier can be impaired by:
• Saturation of the filter pad
• Filter pad faulty because too old
• Leaks
Signs of such problems can be:
• Poor cooling performance
• Total failure of the air conditioning equipment (damage to/block - age in other components)
The filter/drier has to be replaced every 2 years and every time repair work is carried out on the air conditioning system!

5 Evaporator

The evaporator is on the interior of the vehicle under the dashboard. It is here that the high pressure liquid refrigerant evaporates. The cold produced in the process is radiated to the environment via the surface of the evaporator (ribs).
Failure of the evaporator can be due to:
• Soiling from the outside impairing the air flow through the evaporator
• Blockage due to soiled refrigerant or damaged components
• Leaks due to faulty sealing rings or oxidation
This can make itself noticed in the following ways:
• Smell development due to microorganisms
• Poor cooling performance
• Total failure of the air conditioning equipment
Regular disinfection of the evaporator is recommended for health and technical reasons!

6 Interior blower

The evaporator is on the interior of the vehicle under the dashboard. It is here that the high pressure liquid refrigerant evaporates. The cold produced in the process is radiated to the environment via the surface of the evaporator (ribs).
Failure of the evaporator can be due to:
• Soiling from the outside impairing the air flow through the evaporator
• Blockage due to soiled refrigerant or damaged components
• Leaks due to faulty sealing rings or oxidation
This can make itself noticed in the following ways:
• Smell development due to microorganisms
• Poor cooling performance
• Total failure of the air conditioning
equipment

7 Expansion valve

The expansion valve is the point separating the high pressure and low pressure areas.
It regulates the flow of refrigerant depending on temperature, by injecting more or less liquid refrigerant into the evaporator.
At the same time it passes the gas refrigerant from the evaporator on to the compressor.
Failure of the expansion valve can be due to:
• Icing up due to too much water
in the refrigerant (dryer saturated)
• Soiling due to faulty components/ poor servicing
• Leaks caused by faulty sealing rings
This can make itself noticed in the following ways:
• Poor cooling performance
• Partial failure of the compressor
• Total failure of the air conditioning system
